Faith Over Fear

There seems like so many things to be afraid of in society. Turn on the news, and you’ll see lots of examples of scary things that happen in our world: murder, violence, scams, diseases, and people doing horrible things without remorse. As Christians, what should our response be to all the fear in the world?

We should respond with faith.

If you are a born-again Believer in the power of God, then you have nothing to fear in this world. Our savior Jesus, in John 16:33 tells us “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” No matter how bad the world gets, rest assured, Jesus has overcame it, so we can have faith things will be okay.

What is faith? To have faith is to have full assurance that God will provide what he promises (Hebrews 11:1). The whole Bible is a testament to all the times God protected, provided for, delivered, and blessed beyond belief his chosen people. God has a great track record of delivering people from bad situations! We can have confident faith that he will do the same for us.

Many times, the Scriptures encourage us to let go of fear and adopt faith. Here are a few key scriptures about not having fear to inspire you:

“When hard pressed, I cried to the Lord; he brought me into a spacious place. The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” Psalm 118:5-6 (NIV)

“So do not fear, for I am with you;
    do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
    I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10 (NIV)

“Even though I walk
    through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
    for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.” Psalms 23:4 (NIV)

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:6-7 (NIV)

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27

In our daily walk, as we face struggles, scary things, remember, don’t be afraid. We have God on our side! We have the Lord of the Universe watching over us. Jesus defeated death, so there isn’t anything else he can’t handle.

Go through life boldly, instead of timidly being afraid (2 Timothy 1:7). Living this way will show the world that Jesus makes you a better person. It will show the world that Jesus makes a difference when he comes into our hearts. Live a life that puts faith over fear.
