4 Conversation Starters for Sharing About Jesus over Coffee

As a Christian, you are called to share about Jesus with others. It is part of The Great Commission. Jesus gave these instructions before He went back to heaven: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:19-20). And even though this calling is clear, actually doing it can be difficult. Sharing about Jesus can feel intimidating, even if it’s with friends or family. That’s why we’ve put together four conversation starters for sharing about Jesus that you can use today. So, invite a friend or family member over for a cup of coffee, get out your Christian mugs, and start the conversation like this.

Conversation Starters for Sharing About Jesus

Here are four questions to get the Jesus conversation started.

1. What Do You Think Happens Once We Die?

Death is something everyone will experience at one point or another. Additionally, most people will experience the death of a friend or family member. Because of this, talking about death is a good way to start sharing about Jesus. Let the other person answer before sharing your belief and what the Bible says about death and what happens after we die when you ask this question.

2. Do You Think People Are Born Inherently Good or Bad?

Many people think people are inherently good. If this is how the person answers the question, dig deeper by asking where they think the bad comes from and why people constantly choose the wrong things. If the person answers inherently bad, this is a great way to talk about the redeeming hope of Jesus that enables us to choose the right things and experience forgiveness.

3. Why Do You Think There is Evil/Good in the World?

You don’t have to look too hard to see that there is both evil and good in the world. This question opens a discussion about why good and evil exist and why God allows terrible things to happen. Share about the promises of Jesus, the hope of eternal life, and the victory that Jesus already won.

4. What Have You Heard About Jesus?

Whether a Christian or not, most people have heard about Jesus in one way or another, even if through a song or on TV. This question gives you insight into how the person perceives Jesus and opens the conversation to share about who the Bible says Jesus is and what He’s been like in your life.

Tips for Sharing About Jesus

A really encouraging passage in the Bible takes some of the pressure off you when sharing about Jesus with others. It says, “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor. For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building” (1 Corinthians 3:6-9). With this in mind, here are three tips for sharing about Jesus.

1. Don’t Be Pushy

Remember, sharing about Jesus is a conversation, not a debate or argument. While you can confidently share your beliefs and opinions, be open to hearing the other person’s as well.

2. Don’t Rush the Conversation

Sharing about Jesus is a serious matter and shouldn’t be rushed. To be intentional about this experience, plan enough time to dive into the deep questions without being interrupted or rushed.

3. Don’t Go in with Expectations

Enter the conversation with prayer but without expectations. That way, you can be open to whatever happens without feeling discouraged or disappointed if it doesn’t go as you hoped. Remember, God is in control, so you don’t have to try to be.
