Be Still: The Meaning Behind the Christian T-Shirt

Be Still: The Meaning Behind the Christian T-Shirt

“He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth’” (Psalm 46:20, NIV).

Are you feeling worried or anxious? Are you overwhelmed with all that is happening in the world today or in your personal life? Do you find yourself reading the news or scrolling through social media wondering where God is in the midst of everything? Are you fearful of the future or even the present?

You are not alone.

But, most importantly, there is hope!

When these negative thoughts and feelings arise, there is one thing we can do to help realign ourselves with the truth: as the scripture says, we can “Be still and know.”

“He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth’” (Psalm 46:20, NIV).

It can be hard to remember that God is in control when all we see are news headlines and social media posts that remind us how out of control everything is right now. However, when we choose to be still and spend time with God, we will be reminded of the truth that God will be exalted across the nation and around the world. That is our hope in the midst of hopelessness.

The Benefits of Being Still

In every situation we face, there are benefits of choosing to be still and find peace and hope. For example:

  1. Instead of turning on the news first thing in the morning to see what fear-stricken headline awaits, be still. Spend your first moments awake in prayer with God. Remind yourself that no matter what the news is reporting today that God is still in control. This is a great way to start your day.
  1. When you scroll through social media pages and see the content others are posting, take a moment to be still and remember that God will be exalted in all the earth, even though He isn’t exalted everywhere right now. (And if you want to follow uplifting and encouraging pages on social media, check out All Things By Faith on Instagram and Facebook where we post encouraging scripture throughout the week).
  1. When you have to have a tough conversation with a family member or friend who doesn’t share the same beliefs as you, first be still. Ask God to bring peace to the conversation. There is nothing He cannot do.
  1. Before responding to a controversial social media post, be still. Allow God to give you the words to say so you can respond lovingly and in ways that bring honor and glory to God. There is too much hate on the internet--this will help you be a voice of love.
  1. When you feel overwhelmed with work, school, family, or anything else, take a moment--in the midst of everything--to be still. Take a breath, reconnect yourself with God, and continue your day with more strength, energy, and motivation than before.

Being still is your key to remaining peaceful, hopeful, and full of faith in the midst of hard times. When you quiet your thoughts and focus on the truth--that God is God, and He is good--your days will look very different. This act helps us...

  • Realign our thoughts with the truth
  • Experience God’s peace
  • Stay encouraged
  • Release anxiety and worry
  • Receive courage and hope for today and the future

There is power in being still and knowing that God is God--good, kind, loving, powerful, and in control. Because of this, Be Still is a phrase you will see on many of our faith t-shirts and accessories.
