4 Tips for How to Find Christian Friends
Below are four ways to find Christian friends. Whichever route you choose, just be sure to put yourself out there and be open to meeting new people. Trust that God will provide the right friendships for you when the time is right.1. Know What Type of Friend You’re Looking For
If you’re looking for “Christian” friends, it’s likely because you want to form a community with people who share your values, priorities, and beliefs. Possibly people who can encourage you in your faith and share a similar lifestyle. “Christian” is an excellent place to start. However, it’s important to remember that everyone is in a different place in their life. Instead of putting a blanket statement like “Christian” on your search, consider what the Bible says makes a good friend. Then, search for someone like that. Proverbs 18:24 says, “One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Proverbs 13:20 says, “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.” Proverbs 17:17 says, “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.” So, keep in mind that when you’re looking for a Christian friend, you’re actually looking for someone who is loyal, wise, and loving. And we know that the fear of the Lord is wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). And we know that love is patient, kind, doesn’t envy or boast, is not proud, does not dishonor others, isn’t selfish or easily angered, keeps no record of wrong, doesn’t delight in evil, rejoices in truth, always protects, trusts, hopes, and perseveres (1 Corinthians 13:8-12). Find a friend with those qualities and characteristics, and you’re good to go. (P.S. It’s important to make sure you’re someone with those attributes too!)2. Go Where the People Are
The best place to start when seeking how to find Christian friends is where the people are. You can start at church or church-related events like Bible study. But even Christians do ordinary things like go to the gym, hit the farmer’s market on Saturday morning, and spend time at a local coffee shop. Because many people go to these places–both those who believe in Jesus and those who don’t–it will take some time and effort to find Christian friends. It’s going to take you striking up a conversation and asking questions to get to know people better. However, putting yourself out there is essential if you really want to build a community of people to do life with.3. Join Activity Groups and Do Things with Other People
If going to a coffee shop and starting a conversation with a random person doesn’t sound fun or exciting to you, that’s ok. You can also find Christian friends by getting involved in activities. It's much easier to start a conversation when you’re doing something with other people. Some ideas are to volunteer at a local nonprofit or community organization, attend church-related events, or join a workout class at your gym.
4. Use the Internet to Your Advantage
The internet is a valuable resource for how to find Christian friends. For example, you can download a friend dating app, like Bumble or United Young. Bumble is traditionally a secular dating app, but they created Bumble BFF to find friends. On Bumble, you can mark your religion on your profile, making it easier to identify who might make a great Christian friend in your area. United Young is a new but similar app focused solely on connecting Christians, both for dates and friendships.
